17 May 10 - A small group of delegates from AEA went to Yellowknife to meet with officials and media to discuss implications to the NWT should the Edmonton City Centre Airport be closed. It was discovered that people in the NWT are misinformed and in need of proper information about the airport.
The AEA group, which consisted of Ed Schlemko, Dr. Fernando, Mary Anne Stanway, Nathan Black and Allison Boychuk, were aided by former NWT MLA Bruce McLaughlin. The group was able to meet with MLA David Ramsey and provide him with some facts on the airport. He later introduced the group in the Legislature and also brought up the topic of Medevacs during Question Period. He asked NWT Health Minister Sandi Lee if the NWT government had calculated what the increased costs would be and how
patient care for NWT residents would be affected by the closure of the Edmonton City Centre. She did not have a proper answer.
The group also met with a supportive Yellowknife Mayor Gordon Van Tighem. AEA was interviewed by CBC TV, the Yellowknifer Newspaper and CJCD Radio. The Yellowknifer ran a story on ECCA Friday with the caption "What's a life worth? Airport closure threatens lives, says medevac operator".
A big thank you to Paul Laserich, owner of Adlair Aviation Ltd, for all his help and support making the trip even more successful.
